Meta to Reportedly Release AI Personas Next Month

Meta is preparing to launch AI-powered chatbots with different “personas” across its platforms as early as next month, the Financial Times reports. These chatbots will be able to converse in a human-like way, boasting features like recommendations and search.

According to the Financial Times, Meta is working on developing chatbots with different personalities for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. One of the AI personas is reportedly a travel advisor that will provide travel recommendations and tips “in the style of a surfer.” Another will take on the persona of Abraham Lincoln.

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, spoke about the company’s plans to build AI personas back in February. “Over the longer term, we’ll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We’re exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences,” reads his Facebook post.

Zuckerberg talked about the company’s AI initiatives in an earnings call in early August. He shared that Meta is using its proprietary large language model LLaMA to develop various AI tools.

The upcoming AI personas are also expected to help Meta move forward in several directions. First, these interactive AI personas will presumably boost engagement across its platforms, which could provide the company with a competitive advantage against rivals like TikTok.

Secondly, Meta will most likely use them to collect more data to strengthen its ad-targeting strategies, which could lead to privacy concerns. Snapchat, for example, is already experimenting with sponsored links within its ChatGPT-powered My AI chatbot. Interestingly, the introduction of sponsored links led to a surge in one-star reviews for the platform.

Researcher Alessandro Paluzzi already alerted the public on a possible Instagram Chat with AI feature. According to the leaked screenshot he posted on Twitter (now X), Instagram’s chatbot can answer questions, help users compose messages, and provide advice in the voice of 30 different AI personalities.

Meta may share more details of its AI initiatives at its Connect developer conference in September.
