Meta Lays Off Employees To Align Staffing With Strategy

Meta has begun laying off employees from WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs.

Reports claim this is not a massive company-wide layoff plan but smaller cuts targeting specific areas as part of team reorganizations. Meta has yet to disclose a broader view of the layoffs or identify how many employees these cuts have impacted.

Employees started posting comments on social media about their layoffs. Dave Arnold, a company spokesperson, said, “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy.”

He said, “This includes moving some teams to different locations and moving some employees to different roles. In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees.”

Meta announced its second-quarter results in August. It beat market revenue expectations and published a positive sales forecast for the third quarter. Meta’s share price has jumped more than 60% this year.

Meta recently also fired over 20 employees from its Los Angeles office for misusing company meal credits. At larger sites, Meta provides food services, while at smaller locations, it offers meal vouchers for food delivery to the office during work hours. According to the company, those employees used the vouchers for home deliveries and non-food items like laundry detergent and facial cream.

Meta laid off more than 21,000 people in 2022 and 2023, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg declaring 2023 the “year of efficiency.” While other tech giants started 2024 reducing their staff numbers, Meta remained more stable. However, reports indicated that Meta cut some jobs in Reality Labs earlier this year after restructuring the organization.
