Anthropic Releases Stronger AI Model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet

Anthropic has published a new version of its Claude family of AI models. Called Claude 3.5 Sonnet, it boasts improved performance and accuracy.

Anthropic says Claude 3.5 Sonnet outperforms all industry models in various standardized testing areas, such as graduate-level reasoning and coding proficiency. It also claims Claude 3.5 Sonnet “shows marked improvement in grasping nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is exceptional at writing high-quality content with a natural, relatable tone.”

Anthropic claims the new model operates at twice the speed of the older Claude 3 Opus models while keeping processing costs roughly the same. Claude 3.5 Sonnet also has a much better vision model, according to Anthropic, meaning it can better interpret charts and transcribe text from flawed images.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available free of charge on Claude.ai and the Claude iOS app, as well as on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. Those with Claude Pro or team subscriptions will be able to access the model with higher rate limits.

The new model’s release also brings a new previewing capability on Claude.ai, called Artifacts. When Artifacts is in use, Claude’s output will be displayed in a separate previewing window, making it easier for users to revise their work.

Artifacts is the first step towards Anthropic’s goal of building a collaborative platform for teams and organizations. Anthropic plans to invest in more features that support the needs of businesses, including integrating its AI capabilities with enterprise applications.

Anthropic states that it has maintained its commitment to safety and security with this new model and notes it shared Claude 3.5 Sonnet with the UK’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute and its American counterpart for a pre-deployment safety evaluation.

The release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet comes just three months after the release of Anthropic’s Claude 3 family of models. The company aims to maintain this pace to “substantially improve the tradeoff curve between intelligence, speed, and cost every few months.” It says it will release Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus later this year.

Both Google and Amazon back Anthropic. They have collectively invested billions in the startup, positioning it as a rival to OpenAI.
