Wix Payments Review [2024]: Fees, Plans & Is It Worth It?

Ivana Shteriova Written by:
30 August 2024
If you have a Wix Business plan, you can take advantage of Wix’s built-in payment gateway, Wix Payments. It’s an all-in-one business solution that allows you to conveniently manage payments from orders, events, bookings, and subscriptions from the same platform where you manage your Wix online business.

As someone fascinated by (almost) everything Wix, I just had to dive deep into what Wix Payments offers and how it compares against the competition. Can an underdog like Wix Payments stand a chance against big players like PayPal and Stripe?

My research for this review proves it doesn’t have to be a battle. In fact, Wix Payments can make friends with 80+ payment gateways available through Wix. But I found that as Wix’s own payment system, it definitely has the edge over other payment providers in aspects like compatibility, flexibility, and fees.

It costs you nothing to set up and use, so why not give it a chance?

Discover all the reasons to hit that Connect Wix Payments button on your site or why your business might not be a good fit for it. If you’re on the fence, you can also check out some of the best Wix alternatives I found. Let’s dive in!

Wix Payments Overview

Wix Payments screenshot
Wix Payments allows you to manage your payments and e-commerce website all from one central dashboard
Wix Payments lets you accept online payments through your website just like you would with PayPal and Stripe. You can use it to collect one-time or recurring payments across all Wix products, including Stores, Bookings, Video, Music, Events, and Invoices. You can also use Wix Point of Sale (POS) for in-person payments.

Because visitors can now stay on your website to complete their purchase, Wix Payments allows you to streamline the checkout process and create a customized and on-brand experience for your customers.

But the biggest advantage from a business perspective? You get to manage your payments from the same dashboard you manage your orders, inventory, bookings, subscriptions, marketing, and website. If you decide to use it exclusively, you’ll eliminate the need to hop from platform to platform to get your transactions in check. You can receive payouts daily, weekly, or monthly, and it takes 3 to 5 business days for the money to arrive in your account.

Wix Payments is a fully secure and PCI-DSS-compliant payment solution, which is the highest information security standard for entities accepting credit card payments. You can securely process on-site and in-app payments thanks to its HTTPS/TLS data encryption. Wix also uses AI and a rule-based risk system to protect you and your customers from common fraud attacks.

Payment Methods Accepted by Wix

If you choose Wix Payments as your payment provider, you can and should connect various payment methods – because customers love having choices! Wix Payments lets you accept payments from all well-known credit card brands, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners, and Maestro.

You can only choose one provider for debit/credit card payments, but you can add alternative payment methods like Apple Pay. Depending on your location, Wix offers plenty of buy now, pay later options such as Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, Sezzle, and PayPal Pay Later. You can use Giropay if you’re in Germany, and Boleto and Pix if you’re in Brazil. iDEAL is an option if you’re in the Netherlands.

Not sure about Wix Payments? No problem! Wix allows you to choose from 80+ payment gateways worldwide, including popular options like PayPal and Stripe. But you might not get the competitive rates you’d get with Wix Payments.

Wix Payments Fees

You can connect and use Wix Payments for free, but you won’t be able to avoid processing fees. All payment processors, including Wix Payments, charge processing fees.

Transaction Fees

Unlike some competitors, Wix doesn’t charge transaction fees. Not on any of its plans. Not if you choose a third-party payment provider. Nada! Shopify, for example, will charge you transaction fees unless you use its native payment processor Shopify Payments.

Processing Fees

In the US, Wix’s processing fees are pretty standard, typically 2.9% of the transaction amount + $0.30. While some payment services determine their rates based on multiple factors like the size of your business and the type of credit card used, Wix keeps its prices transparent and straightforward by charging one fixed rate.

Refunds & Chargebacks

Wix Payments activity overview screenshot
Wix Payments won’t charge you for refunds or chargebacks
Wix makes it easy (and free) to manage refunds. It typically takes 3 to 5 days for the customer to receive their refund, and Wix only keeps the processing fee from the original payment.

You can also issue a full or partial refund. After initiating a partial refund, you can return the remaining balance at a later point in time, but you can’t cancel or reverse refunds.

Chargebacks are different, and you get little control over them. A customer can request one directly from their bank or credit card issuer. It typically goes like this:
  1. A customer purchases something from your website
  2. You ship it or send it electronically to the customer
  3. The customer initiates a chargeback request and receives the funds
  4. You lose your product and money
Wix only knows you received a chargeback after the money from your account goes back to the customer. The last thing you need in this situation is to lose more money in chargeback fees. While competitors like Stripe and Shopify will add to the frustration by making you pay $15 for every chargeback, Wix has no chargeback fees. Regardless, you’ll want to keep a low chargeback ratio to keep Wix from closing your account.

Choosing the Right Wix E-commerce Plan for Your Site

Wix Payments is only available on the Business and E-commerce plans. There are three: Core, Business, and Business Elite. All plans allow you to display up to 500,000 physical and digital products and include critical e-commerce features like abandonment cart recovery, fast checkout, and advanced site analytics.

Here are my recommendations:
  • The Core plan will be ideal if you just want to build a compelling store, accept payments through your site, and sell on social channels.
  • If you ship to worldwide locations and want to efficiently manage end-to-end order fulfillment, the Business plan is a better option.
  • If you want to host high-end image and video marketing campaigns, the Business Elite plan comes with unlimited storage space and video hours, plus you’ll get customized reports with valuable insights to grow your business.
If you sell internationally, the Business and Business Elite plans allow you to display prices in your customers’ local currencies. But Wix itself does not support multi-currency selling so you’ll ultimately have to choose one currency for all your sales.

The Business and Business Elite plans also allow you to offer subscriptions and collect recurring payments, which is perfect if you want to sell subscriptions. Subscriptions are currently only available for physical products, but you can sell downloadable digital products that Wix can automatically deliver to your customers. Square, for instance, will make you do it manually.

Wix premium plans come with a suite of free native tools designed for specific industries. Wix Bookings, the platform’s free booking tool, is ideal for salon businesses. You can use Wix Events to sell tickets for online and in-person events. If you’re in the creative space, Wix Art Store is a commission-free tool that allows you to sell your art in digital and print form.

Don’t know which plan to choose? Our expert Wix review can help you decide.

How to Set Up Wix Payments

To connect Wix Payments, you need to have a published Wix website and subscribe to one of its Business or E-commerce plans. Also make sure it supports your location and that your business isn’t on Wix’s prohibited products and services list.

Wix account dashboard
Wix makes it easy to connect its in-house payment solution to your site
If you tick all the boxes, you can connect Wix Payments through your dashboard. Go to Settings, and click on Accept payments. Here you can see all the payment processors available for your location.

If available, Wix Payments will show up first on the list. After you click Connect, a list of restricted items and services will pop up, asking you to confirm that you aren’t selling any of those.

You won’t receive your money if you attempt to sell prohibited items with Wix Payments. If you’re on Wix’s naughty list, check out the leading credit card processing companies in 2024 to find a processor that accepts high-risk merchants.

Wix Payments Account Setup
It took me a few minutes to complete the account setup
The final steps include providing details like your business type, personal information, and bank account. After completing the account setup process, the Wix Payments verification can take up to 7 business days.

It’s important to note that you won’t be able to switch between individual and business account types once you start the process – and there’s a deadline for your setup. If you don’t complete the process, Wix Payments will suspend your account within 30 days. After 60 days, Wix will refund customers for any sales made through your site during this time.

How Does Wix Payments Compare to Other Payment Processors?

Wix is a no-strings-attached type of partner – you’re free to interact with as many payment providers as you want. Plus, there are no extra charges (or hard feelings) involved should you decide to take advantage of other options. Depending on your location, you can choose from 80+ payment processors worldwide.

You can make your site appear more trustworthy in your shoppers’ eyes by offering PayPal and Stripe. They’re the most popular, and it’s good to use them along with Wix Payments as many customers prefer to check out with well-known processors.

Let’s see how Wix Payments compares to PayPal and Stripe.

Wix Payments PayPal Stripe
Stay on site for checkout
Number of supported countries 14 200+ 46
Number of supported currencies 6 25 135+
Processing fees per transaction 2.9% + $0.30 2.99% + $0.49 2.9% + $0.30
Chargeback fees $20 $15
If you fall within Wix’s supported countries (Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States), Wix Payments is the most cost-effective method as you can save on certain fees. You won’t need to send your customers to a third-party checkout and can keep your payment page on-brand, all while completing transactions faster.

What Are the Best Wix Alternatives?

Wix and its in-house payment solution may not be ideal for businesses selling internationally. Although you can display prices in multiple currencies, its solution lacks a system that supports multi-currency sales. You might also find it limiting if you anticipate rapid growth or have a large inventory and a high volume of orders to handle.

While Wix can possibly provide the greatest value on the market, these alternatives might be a better fit for your needs.

Squarespace: Stunning Website Templates & Plenty of Social Media Tools for Your Store1

If you’re a brand-conscious small- to mid-sized business, Squarespace has the best out-of-the-box designs to help you build an attention-grabbing storefront. This e-commerce platform also has an abundance of creator tools like the Unfold app and Squarespace Video Studio to help you create wow-worthy content for your website and social channels.

While Squarespace doesn’t support multi-currency selling and doesn’t offer a native payment solution, it’s an exceptional user-friendly solution for a new or small business that wants a reliable e-commerce solution. You can add Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Afterpay to your arsenal, and you’ll have access to powerful marketing tools like mailing lists, abandoned cart recovery emails, and subscriptions.

Different transaction fees apply, depending on whether you’re selling memberships or products, but you can avoid them by subscribing to Squarespace Commerce plans.

Shopify: Advanced E-commerce Features Ideal for Scaling and Growing a Business1

Shopify is a powerful e-commerce platform with advanced product, inventory, sales, shipping, tax, and analytics features. All of these can greatly benefit you if growth is your main focus. There are over 100 gateways. Depending on your plan, you can expect to pay 2%, 1%, or 0.5% for every transaction with third-party providers.

Shopify also offers its native payment gateway. If you choose to go with Shopify Payments, you can avoid transaction fees and sell in multiple currencies.

You can access more e-commerce apps with Shopify, but due to its robustness, don’t expect to get online as quickly as with Wix. Each theme is specifically designed for selling online, but you might need to set aside $150 to $350 for a premium one. All Wix templates, on the other hand, are free, and the gridless drag-and-drop editor gives you more creative control.

Its B2B features are also impressive.

Wix Is the Best Payment Solution for Your Website, But Give Your Customers Choice

As a native solution, Wix Payments seamlessly integrates with Wix websites and other in-house tools to give you (and your clients) a seamless experience. You won’t need to send customers elsewhere for checkout, which gives you greater control over the checkout process. You can also add custom statement descriptors, so customers can easily recognize your transactions on their statements.

And even if someone claims they don’t recognize the payment, Wix won’t charge you a dime for chargebacks, which isn’t the case with some Wix Payments competitors (*ahem* Shopify and Stripe). Unlike some of these e-commerce providers, Wix also gives you a choice to use third-party providers with zero transaction fees.

Speaking of choice: your customers also deserve it. Some might be reluctant to proceed if they don’t see a name they trust. Although fully compliant and reliable, Wix Payments is relatively new, so not everyone might be familiar with it. Thanks to the 80+ other gateways available at Wix, you can combine Wix Payments with popular payment methods to allow everyone to pay with their preferred choice.

With Wix Payments, you can manage all your transactions from the same dashboard you use for your entire online business. If any problems arise, you can call on the same team that knows your site best to fix it. And since it’s free to set up and use, you have nothing to lose by adding it to your site.

Pros Cons
  • Free to set up and use
  • Manage everything from one dashboard
  • 100% compatibility with Wix websites and tools
  • Flexible to combine with other payment processors like PayPal and Stripe
  • Doesn’t support high-risk merchants
  • You’ll need to connect different payment methods individually
  • Shoppers might not be familiar with the brand and prefer to pay using established processors like PayPal
