Sticker Mule has quickly grown into one of the most innovative and exciting companies in the printing world.
In an exclusive interview with Website Planet, Anthony Constantino, Sticker Mule’s co-founder, shared the company’s bold vision to simplify online commerce. Expanding from stickers to a variety of products including T-shirts, magnets, and buttons, Sticker Mule now boasts a team of 1,200 people across 39 countries.
With the launch of their new Stores platform, they’re making it easier than ever for users to create and sell products seamlessly online.
Introduce Sticker Mule to our audience, please.
Sure! Sticker Mule is often referred to as the internet’s most badass brand. With a team of 1,200 people across 39 countries, we are one of the top printing companies on the internet. We have nearly 1,000 manufacturing jobs in the United States, producing everything from our flagship product—stickers—to T-shirts, acrylic products, magnets, buttons, and more. We’re proud to be the internet’s hottest and fastest-growing printing company.
Share the narrative of your company: What inspired the concept, and how has it progressed to date?
Yeah, sure. We got started pretty quickly. I had a unique situation with my co-founder, who was in his 70s when we launched. He had gone through his entire career without ever using a computer. Then, just before Christmas in 2010, he got a computer for the first time. We started talking about the internet, and he asked, “What do people even do on the internet?” I showed him a website called CafePress, and the next day, he came back to me and said, “I love what you showed me yesterday. We need to start an internet company together.”
At first, I told him, “Let’s discuss it in a few months; I’ve got a lot going on right now.” But he was insistent, saying, “You showed me the internet yesterday—already five years too late. We need to start right now!” So, we got started. Believe it or not, three months after that conversation, we had a signal and launched our website. On the first day, we received 15 to 20 orders, and we went viral almost immediately because people loved the design process.
That was the simple beginning. Now, 14 years later, we’re a team of 1,200 people across 39 countries. It’s been a wild journey, and we sell much more than just stickers now. Recently, we launched a platform called “Stores.” Over the years, we’ve built our company by selling products and shipping them to customers, making the buying process easy. Now, we’re making it just as easy to sell. With our new Stores platform, anyone who has purchased from us can now sell through us. We’re in beta and already have 10,000 stores launched.
Could you outline the services you provide?
Sure! We offer a wide range of printing services. We started with stickers, which remain our biggest product, but we now print around 15 different products. Our approach is to focus only on products where we can truly excel—we aim to have an absolute advantage in everything we do. We manufacture all our own products, and while printing and shipping are our primary services, we also provide several other offerings to help people succeed online.
For instance, we recently launched our Stores platform, which is designed to help people create businesses and make money online. With Stores, you can sell anything, and we handle all the customer service and fulfillment. As Sticker Mule is privately owned, we have the flexibility to be generous with our margins, making it the most lucrative way to sell merchandise online.
In addition to Stores, we offer several supplementary services to support our users. We have a shipping platform, an online design tool called Studio (which competes with Canva and is completely free), a background removal tool called Trace, and an AI upscaling service to ensure everything prints beautifully. We even offer the upscaling tool as a standalone service for those who want to use it for their own purposes.
So, while our main focus is on printing products, we’re also deeply invested in helping people sell and grow their businesses with our various tools and services.
What is the overarching mission of Sticker Mule?
I consider myself an idealist, and since I don’t have investors or anyone pressuring me to focus solely on profits, I don’t wake up every day with the goal of just making money. My priority is making people happy. I’ve built a company where my employees are genuinely happy—over the past 14 years, not a single salaried employee has quit. We regularly conduct happiness surveys, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We also survey our customers, and our Net Promoter Score (NPS) is excellent.
Right now, our mission extends beyond just our team and customers. We’re focused on uplifting the world by helping people achieve happiness through our Stores platform. I believe that economic well-being is a fundamental human need, as reflected in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. That’s why we’re dedicated to promoting happiness by enabling people to succeed financially through our platform.
What distinguishes you from other companies in the same domain?
We’re the true innovators in this space. In the sticker world, most of the competition consists of copycats—they all have websites that look just like ours, but they’re not innovating. They’re replicating things we did eight years ago. All of our ideas are fresh, like our unique Stores platform and our shipping platform—no one else has anything like them.
We’ve built everything ourselves, and we have 100 engineers working full-time at Sticker Mule. Our road map is huge, and we’re constantly working on new innovations. I recently had a call with our incredible CTO, and we discussed how to speed things up because our roadmap is so extensive. So, while the competition is busy copying what we did years ago, we’re focused on pushing forward with our innovative vision. We’re the leaders, and they’re the imitators.
What is your vision for the future of your industry?
I like to think of what we’re doing with our Stores platform as Commerce 3.0. If you look at the evolution of retail, before companies like Sticker Mule, opening a retail store was a long and complicated process. You had to find a location, stock it, and figure out what to sell. Then the Internet came along, which made starting a business faster, but you still had to manage a lot of the backend infrastructure yourself—like software and fulfillment.
When Shopify arrived, it made things easier by simplifying website creation, but you still had to manage backend operations. Now, with Sticker Mule Stores, we’re taking things to the next level. It’s all about digital store creation—within minutes, you can launch a store and start selling products without having to worry about the backend. We handle everything, from customer service to fulfillment and software management.
So, I see the future of commerce as this—sellers will only need to focus on marketing, creativity, and product design. They won’t have to deal with customer service, fulfillment, or any of the technical infrastructure. We’ll take care of it all, making it easier than ever to start and run a business.
