OVHcloud Plan Pricing: The COMPLETE Comparison for 2024

Ryan Jones Written by:
30 August 2024
OVHcloud offers web hosting services ranging from your basic budget shared hosting all the way to fully-managed virtual data centers. Because of this, OVHcloud might appeal to many different users. But with such a vast range of options, is the quality and value of each service competitive?

For the most part, OVHcloud manages to avoid spreading itself too thin. Its VPS and dedicated servers offer a lot of power at competitive prices.

It wasn’t all good news, though – the budget hosting plans left a lot to be desired compared to the alternatives. And I was disappointed by the absence of a free trial or money-back guarantee.

To find all this out, I evaluated each and every hosting service category offered by OVHcloud, comparing them with those from other top providers. Read on to see if one of OVHcloud’s plans might be a good fit for your needs and budget.

Short on Time? These Are OVHcloud’s Best Plans for 2024:

  • Performance 1 ($11.991): Easy-to-use, flexible cloud hosting
  • Essential VPS ($10.581): Affordable, mid-range VPS, suitable for many businesses
  • Rise-1 dedicated server ($75.141): Entry-level server, far cheaper than competing hosts

Features and Pricing Overview

Premium Hosting Delivers Good Value – Budget Plans? Not So Much

OVHcloud offers two shared hosting plans, four cloud hosting plans, five VPS plans, a range of cloud VPSs and dedicated servers, and three categories of managed bare metal server options.

Payment plans range from monthly billing with no commitments (for some categories), to semi-annual, annual, and biennial contracts. The available payment terms differ depending on the hosting plan you choose, but most notably, plans do not rise in price upon renewal.

As for payment methods, OVHcloud accepts all major credit and debit cards, but PayPal and crypto are currently not supported. Unfortunately, OVHcloud does not offer free trials or money-back guarantees. You can easily set your hosting plan to cancel on your contract’s expiration date, but if you’d like to cancel earlier, you’ll need to contact support. This can be a slow and cumbersome process, and it won’t result in a refund.

I didn’t discover any upsells or hidden charges during my tests, but some features are locked behind premium plans.

OVHcloud’s strength is in high-end hosting services. Therefore, resellers and large organizations will get good value from OVHcloud.

As these plans are often aimed at beginners, you can normally expect a focus on ease-of-use and better support services than the higher-end hosting solutions. This service provides you with shared resources on a physical server with other customers. It is the most affordable way to get your site online, but it comes at the expense of consistent performance. That being said, if you’re just getting started or are simply looking to run a low-traffic site, you’ll find shared hosting to be more than adequate.

An important note: OVHcloud does not advertise its shared hosting plans on its US site, so they may be unavailable in the USA.

Personal

feature-list-of-ovhcloud's-shared-hosting-plans
OVHcloud’s free domain name adds value, but it isn’t quite enough
The Personal plan is OVHcloud’s cheapest hosting plan. In spite of the low price, the resource limits are pretty generous – you get unlimited monthly traffic, an allowance for up to five sites and 10 email accounts, and 100GB of storage. However, depending on which of OVHcloud’s regional websites you’re buying from, this may only be on a traditional HDD drive.

Aside from that, there’s a free SSL certificate, DDoS protection, and even daily automatic backups. The plan is optimized for WordPress.

While this is all nice stuff, OVHcloud had significant reliability issues during my colleague’s tests. It only achieved 99.37% uptime over months of testing, with some periods of downtime lasting multiple hours.

OVHcloud’s shared hosting plans are also only available on an annual payment plan. If you’re going to commit to an annual or longer term, Hostinger offers better performance for a lower price.

Professional

description-of-ovhcloud's-php-and-multi-site-features
OVHcloud offers multiple PHP versions, including 7.3, 7.4, and 8.0
OVHcloud’s Professional plan is a decent step up from the Personal plan. You get 250GB of storage (but this may also be HDD-based) and support for up to 10 websites. Additionally, this plan comes with a slight boost in overall performance.

You do get more allocated MySQL databases. While the Personal plan only includes a single 200MB database which you’d have to share with all of your sites, the Professional plan gives you three 400MB databases and one 2GB database. The larger DB would be useful for a news site with multiple authors producing content on a daily basis.

The Professional plan is optimized for both WordPress and the Joomla content management system (CMS). Joomla optimization is a rare feature, but A2 Hosting also offers this along with better uptime and unlimited resources. That being said, A2 Hosting’s high renewal fee makes OVHcloud the cheaper option in the long term.

Is Shared Hosting Right for You?

OVHcloud’s shared hosting plans are a bit lackluster. You can find better-performing budget hosting for lower prices elsewhere.

If you’re looking for a more reliable solution from OVHcloud that can comfortably handle occasional traffic surges, its cloud hosting plans may prove to be a better fit.

This makes it the natural next step in performance for those who do not wish to build from the ground up with VPS or dedicated hosting. Unfortunately, these Cloud hosting plans may be unavailable in the USA, as they are not listed on the US version of OVHcloud’s site.OVHcloud seeks to combine the simplicity of shared hosting with the on-demand scalability of the cloud. Also, unlike the shared hosting plans, you get guaranteed processing power and RAM.

Performance 1

description-of-ovhcloud's-cloud-hosting
Scaling up is easy with OVHcloud’s performance hosting
Performance 1 offers a more-than-adequate starting point. You get 1vCPU and 2GB RAM guaranteed, which should deliver more sustainable performance than basic shared hosting. It’s twice as expensive as the Professional shared plan, but it includes more features. Most notably, you get free basic access to OVHcloud’s expansive content delivery network (CDN).

These plans feature very limited payment options, however. You must pay upfront for a year, as there’s no monthly billing. That being said, Performance 1 is relatively cheap compared to other entry-level cloud hosting plans.

Performance 2

description-of-ovhcloud's-ssl-certificate-and-boost-feature
OVHcloud’s Boost Option is great for periods of heavy traffic
Upgrading to Performance 2 earns you double the processing power and RAM of Performance 1. As you might expect, this plan costs near double the price.

For the extra investment, you’ll only be getting an upgrade to your resources. There are no additional features, so the only reason to choose this plan is for more power and (in some countries) more allocated websites.

So, the price is pretty reasonable, but it’s nothing too special either. If 2vCPU and 3GB RAM are sufficient for your needs, you may prefer Hostinger’s Cloud Startup plan. It’s far cheaper if you commit to a long-term plan, and remains less expensive than OVHcloud’s Performance 2, even upon renewal.

Performance 4

description-of-ovhcloud's-dns-and-cdn-features
OVHcloud’s CDN helps to improve performance in regions away from your chosen data center
Performance 4 is OVHcloud’s highest tier of cloud hosting. With it, you’ll get a mighty 4vCPU cores and 8GB RAM. This should prove sufficient for a lot of sites (up to 500) with heavy traffic and regular surges.

This plan is by no means cheap, but for such a generous allocation of resources, it’s much less expensive than the competition. For example, SiteGround’s Jump Start plan includes the same CPU and RAM limits for almost triple the cost, and that’s with significantly less SSD space.

Is Cloud Hosting Right for You?

Cloud hosting from OVHcloud offers more sustained reliability than shared hosting, with the ability to deal with spikes in traffic. Performance 1 offers a good starting point, with a nice mix of affordability and adequate resources.

However, if you’re looking for a fully-customizable hosting environment with dedicated performance, you should consider a VPS.

A VPS offers some of the same benefits as OVHcloud’s cloud hosting. You get guaranteed resources, allowing for much more consistent performance and reliability.

But instead of instant scalability, a VPS offers a significant degree of customizability. You can configure your server to meet your exact needs and install whatever third-party software you desire. But this level of freedom isn’t for beginners – configuring and maintaining a VPS requires technical knowledge.

Starter

list-of-resources-available-in-ovhcloud's-starter-vps
I was impressed with the low price of OVHcloud’s Starter VPS
OVHcloud’s Starter VPS is available at a very affordable monthly price – you’d be hard-pressed to find a similar option for less. Resources are adequate overall, and the amount of RAM is almost generous.

Aside from a single vCPU, 2GB of RAM, and 20GB of SSD storage, you get unmetered data transfer, but only at 100mbps. This bandwidth might create a bottleneck, as any significant spike in traffic may overload it, especially if you’re running multiple sites.

Essential

description-of-the-scalability-features-in-ovhcloud's-vps
The OVHcloud control panel allows you to manage and scale your VPS
If you’re looking to host more websites and serve bigger audiences, the Essential is probably your best bet. It offers 2 vCPU cores and 4GB RAM, along with bandwidth of 500mbps. The 80GBs of storage included is on NVMe SSDs offering better performance than regular SSDs.

This server will cost you a fair bit, but you can bring the price down with a commitment to an annual or biennial contract.

Furthermore, while paying up front for the entire contract period gets you an additional discount, the Essential server is less expensive than much of the competition even without the discounts.

Elite

description-of-the-performance-features-in-ovhcloud's-vps
OVHcloud’s VPS offers you dedicated resources for mission-critical websites
The Elite VPS is suited to large businesses or computing-intensive online projects. This VPS provides 8 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, 160GB SSD NVMe, and 2gbps unmetered bandwidth.

You can add on even more resources before making a purchase. You can upgrade your RAM all the way up to 32GB and you can increase your NVMe SSD storage to a maximum of 640GB.

Like with the Essential server, you can pay for a long-term contract to bring the price down. But again, even the base price is lower than other popular VPS hosts. For example: a comparable virtual server with Hostinger is more costly even with its discount for new customers, and upon renewal the price triples.

Is VPS Right for You?

OVHcloud’s VPS offerings deliver very good value for money. I’d say the Essential plan is the best of the bunch – it should be a good fit for a range of busy company websites, or a large reseller operation – and the inclusion of NVMe SSD is a nice perk.

However, a virtual server may not be enough to serve very large e-commerce sites with hundreds of simultaneous transactions. If you require real dedicated resources, a dedicated server may be a better option.

If you need to serve absolutely flawless online transactions to huge numbers of customers, you may require the power of a dedicated server. As the name implies, this is an unshared physical server dedicated entirely to your hosting needs.

A dedicated server requires expertise in system administration to configure and maintain, so if you don’t possess this expertise, you’ll need to hire someone who does, or pay for one of OVHcloud’s support plans.

Rise-1

feature-list-for-ovhcloud's-rise-servers
OVHcloud’s Rise-1 should be a good fit for many growing businesses
The Rise-1 is OVHcloud’s cheapest dedicated server, with an Intel Xeon quad-core processor and 32GB of RAM. Rise-1 servers also include up to 500mbps transfer speed, though this isn’t guaranteed – expect this number to fluctuate.

Discounts are available on long-term plans, and you can avoid a significant setup fee if you commit to one of these contracts.

Unfortunately, the Rise series only offers HDD drives by default – if you want SATA or SSD, you’ll have to pay extra.

Regardless, Rise-1 offers impressive value for an entry-level dedicated server. Even if you don’t take advantage of any discounts, it’s significantly cheaper than similar offerings by InterServer, A2 Hosting, and others.

Advance-1

performance-and-bandwidth-features-available-with-ovhcloud's-advance-2-server
OVHcloud’s Advance-1 lets you temporarily increase your bandwidth to handle traffic spikes
The Advance-1 is the least expensive of this series, yet it still offers a hexa-core Intel Xeon processor and 32GB of RAM. You can choose between two 4TB HDD drives or two 512GB SSD NVMe drives for the same price.

One of the biggest upgrades over the Rise servers is an increase to 1gbps unmetered bandwidth. If you need a consistent level of transfer speed, you can get 1gbps guaranteed by paying a significant monthly fee.

Discounts and free setup are available with long-term contracts. Advance-1 may seem pricey, but you’ll struggle to find a resource set like this for less.

HGR-HCI-5

feature-list-of-ovhcloud's-high-grade-servers
OVHcloud’s HGR-HCI-5 server features support for private networks
If you’re looking for some of the most powerful servers available on the market today, OVHcloud has you covered. The HGR-HCI-5 features two AMD EPYC processors offering 24 CPU cores each, and 256GB RAM. These servers can be used to host the entire public and private online infrastructure of a large company without breaking a sweat.

There are two 480GB SSD drives for system storage, and six 3.84TB NVMe SSD drives for persistent storage. You also get 1gbps guaranteed bandwidth within a highly redundant network. Your server is protected by a dual power supply and security through AMD Infinity Guard, which heavily encrypts your virtual machines and memory.

As you can imagine, a dedicated server of this caliber isn’t cheap – you’ll have to budget tens of thousands of dollars per year. Nevertheless, the HGR-HGI-6 provides more computing power than many other hosts even offer. For those that do, like Amazon Web Services, OVHcloud manages to compete with them on price.

Is a Dedicated Server Right for You?

OVHcloud offers a wide range of dedicated servers, all the way from the relatively cheap to Rise-1 to the impressive HGR-HCI-6. In many cases, the Rise-1 server should prove sufficient to begin with. You can always upgrade to meet the demands of a growing audience or more computing-intensive online content.

Best of all, the Rise-1 server will save you a lot of money over competing options. However, keep in mind that these servers are unmanaged. If you need help configuring and maintaining a server at this scale, you may be interested in OVHcloud’s Managed Bare Metal plans.

OVHcloud’s managed bare metal plans offer a cloud environment with dedicated resources. By default, these plans consist of two dedicated servers and two datastores, though more of each can be added at any time.

These plans also offer virtualization through the VMWare Enterprise Plus Hypervisor, which may be useful if you’d like to set up a reselling operation.

As OVHcloud will configure and manage this platform for you, it’s perfect for large companies, or groups of companies who wish to share a pool of resources with outsourced IT help.

Essentials ESS64

description-of-ovhcloud's-managed-bare-metal-service
OVHcloud offers rapid configuration time
While the Essentials ESS64 hosting option is the “entry-level” plan in this category, it’s still going to cost you over a thousand US dollars per month. This includes two dedicated servers, each with 10-core Intel Xeon processors and 64GB RAM.

Despite being the least expensive plan, the Essentials ESS64 plan doesn’t lack features. You’ll have full access to VMware’s virtualization software, allowing you to manage your virtual machines, scale resources, and deploy new sites and apps. Every managed bare metal plan also includes 3gbps bandwidth guaranteed and a pair of 2TB SSD datastores.

You can add more dedicated servers and datastores whenever you wish. Unlike VPS and dedicated servers, you can only purchase these plans on a monthly basis, and there are no discounts for longer terms.

Essentials ESS128

description-of-the-cost-benefits-and-high-speed-network-with-ovhcloud's-managed-bare-metal
OVHcloud’s managed bare metal could help you cut down on overall costs
As every managed bare metal plan includes the same features, the only major difference lies in the computing power of the dedicated servers. Essentials ESS128 includes two servers each with a 14-core processor and 128GB RAM.

The increase in price over the previous plan is steep, and Liquid Web provides better caliber servers for a significantly lower price. It offers a fully-dedicated, managed cloud environment with VMware virtualization with a total of 64 CPU cores and 256GB of RAM.

As Liquid Web also offers much more responsive support, I find it hard to recommend OVHcloud’s ESS128 plan in this case.

Essentials ESS256

description-of-ovhcloud's-scalability-and-virtualization-features
OVHcloud and VMware make it easy to scale and deploy new sites
At the pinnacle of managed hosting from OVHcloud, Essentials ESS256 comes with two dedicated servers with dual Intel Xeon processors, for a total of 28 CPU cores per server. Each server also includes 256GB RAM.

Here, the overall value is dependent on whether this balance of processing power and RAM works for you. Liquid Web’s Dedicated VMWare Private Cloud offers more processing power for less, though it only offers half the RAM of the Essentials ESS256.

If you need a ton of RAM, OVHcloud could still be the better option – but I’d recommend speaking with Liquid Web’s sales team about a custom solution. You may be able to get the additional RAM you need for a lower price.

Is Managed Bare Metal Right for You?

I’d say the Essentials ESS64 plan offers the best value for money. It offers a robust foundation at a reasonable price.

Prices are relatively high on the upper-tier plans. I’d recommend shopping around, as a custom solution at this level might be a more sensible option.

Liquid Web

If you’re looking to host a WordPress site, Liquid Web offers a fully-optimized platform1. While OVHcloud provides basic WordPress optimization with its shared and cloud hosting, it doesn’t include as many WordPress-specific features.Liquid Web

Liquid Web also provides a better support service. OVHcloud will commonly leave you waiting days just to hear the answer to a basic query. Liquid Web guarantees a response within 59 seconds on live chat and phone, and within 59 minutes for tickets. However, as management is included with all these plans, prices tend to be higher than OVHcloud’s unmanaged options.

Hostinger

Hostinger struggles to match the value offered by OVHcloud’s VPS and cloud hosting, but this isn’t the case with its shared hosting. As one of the cheapest shared hosts out there, Hostinger will save you a ton of money1, while still providing an optimized platform for WordPress with great page loading speeds and reliability.

It’s also far less limited when it comes to database space. The cheapest Hostinger plan comes with 3GB of database capacity, which is much more generous than the measly 200MB offered with OVHcloud’s Personal plan. This might be of interest if you’re building a very content-heavy site, like a daily news platform with numerous authors.

Kamatera

If you need a highly customizable cloud VPS, Kamatera is the host for you1. Unlike OVHcloud, which features rather rigid VPS configurations with limited scalability, Kamatera allows you to set your CPU, RAM, and SSD storage to the exact parameters you require.

Kamatera also features per-second pricing with no commitments. This means you pay only for the resources you use, even if you frequently adjust resource capacity. However, OVHcloud’s VPS is cheaper and comes with NVMe SSD, which isn’t offered by default with Kamatera.

FastComet

OVHcloud doesn’t offer a way to try its services risk-free. FastComet provides a 45-day money-back guarantee1 for its shared hosting and a 7-day guarantee for its VPS and dedicated servers.

The best aspect of FastComet is its support service – any issue I’ve brought up in live chat has garnered a response within a minute. OVHcloud’s support service is sluggish in comparison.

That said, FastComet’s price rises sharply upon renewal, making it more expensive than OVHcloud.

InterServer

Looking for a cheap-but-flexible hosting environment for your growing website? InterServer offers unlimited SSD space, websites, data transfer, and databases for a very low price1. While the resource limits with OVHcloud’s shared hosting aren’t onerous, it heavily limits database storage.

InterServer offers free managed support with any VPS plan consisting of 4 or more vCPUs. This is terrific value, as OVHcloud doesn’t include managed support with its VPS plans, though prices are similar.

The drawback with InterServer is that it only has data centers in the US, making it less than ideal for sites with audiences based elsewhere.

A2 Hosting

A2 Hosting’s high-tier shared hosting options1 come with some impressive tech. Plans with “Turbo Servers” offer unlimited NVMe storage and AMD EPYC processors – neither of which are explicitly included with OVHcloud’s shared or cloud hosting. This should result in superior performance.

Another notable feature of A2 Hosting is its refund policy. Cancelling within the 30-day money-back guarantee period gets you a full refund as you’d expect, but you can even cancel outside this period to receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of your contract. OVHcloud offers nothing of the sort.

GreenGeeks

If an eco-friendly angle is important to you (or your brand), GreenGeeks could be a good option. Its shared hosting plans offer good performance1 and WordPress optimizations.

GreenGeeks really shines when it comes to support. Agents are always happy to go the extra mile, solving technical issues that other hosts might not. This makes GreenGeeks a better choice for non-developers.

However, GreenGeeks’ premium hosting – VPS and dedicated servers – lack value compared to OVHcloud.

Which Plan Is Right for You?

OVHcloud generally provides excellent value. Its VPS and dedicated servers significantly outshine the standard hosting plans in terms of value. I also hope they consider implementing a free trial or a money-back guarantee in the future.

If you’re unsure about which hosting plan is the best fit for you, here are my personal recommendations.

For cheap shared hosting, I’d recommend Hostinger over OVHcloud. Hostinger’s Single Shared Hosting plan1 is much cheaper than OVHcloud’s personal plan and offers a more reliable and faster platform, especially for WordPress sites.

If you’re looking for simple but powerful hosting, OVHcloud’s Performance 1 plan may be right for you. It offers dedicated resources that can offer a significant speed boost, without the need to deal with anything overly technical.

OVHcloud’s Essential VPS offers impressive value in the face of competition. With substantial resources, including low latency NVMe SSD storage, can comfortably serve multiple popular sites. Prices are even lower if you commit to a contract.

Finally, if you require the power of a dedicated server, the Rise-1 offers a nice mix of affordability and performance. It’s much cheaper than similar packages offered by the competition.

FAQ

What’s the difference between shared hosting and cloud hosting?

With shared hosting, your website shares the resources of a single physical server with other customers. Cloud hosting serves your website with scalable resources from a network of servers. offering better performance and reliability.

Is OVHcloud easy to use?

OVHcloud’s shared and cloud hosting plans are relatively easy to use. However, the proprietary OVHcloud control panel has major UI issues which can be a source of frustration.

Its support service can also be incredibly slow to respond. Many of the hosts on our list of the best web hosting services for 2024 feature better control panels and more helpful support.

Can you cancel OVHcloud and get a refund?

OVHcloud has no money-back guarantee. It also does not explicitly offer prorated refunds for the unused portion of a prepaid contract. Because of this, there is no guarantee that you will be eligible for a refund upon the cancellation of your account.

What is the cheapest way to host a website?

While OVHcloud does offer an affordable starting point, Hostinger offers better and more reliable performance at a much lower price. If you’re looking to save some money but still receive the benefits of quality hosting, I’d go with Hostinger.

Before you make a final decision, have a quick look at the latest deals for 2024 on our coupon page for great discounts on Hostinger and our other top-rated hosts.
