Can you give us a brief overview of VideoGen as a company and its founding story?
VideoGen is an AI-powered video creation platform. You can think of it as your personal video editing assistant — the fastest and easiest way to create a video. My co-founder David and I started building VideoGen out of our dorm rooms, bootstrapped from day one. I had done freelance video work and seen how important video was for marketing and communication. David had experience building AI video pipelines, and we both saw how time-consuming and expensive the process could be. We figured AI could dramatically simplify it. We launched the first version less than a year ago, and since then, over 3 million people have used it to create videos — everyone from solo creators to global teams. We were fortunate to be accepted into Y Combinator, and today, VideoGen is used by companies like Google, Salesforce, and Crate & Barrel, as well as thousands of creators, marketers, and educators worldwide. How can your clients create videos with the help of AI?
Users can start with a simple prompt or script, and/or upload their own footage — whether that’s a voiceover, talking-head video, or product clips. The AI takes it from there, automatically generating visuals, syncing everything, and adding subtitles, background music, and narration. You can customize the pacing, style, voice, and more. It’s designed to be flexible — someone might use it to make a professional training video, another might generate 100 short-form videos for social media. We have developed a unique block-based video editor that gives users more control, while still keeping things simple. You also allow your users to generate copyright-free videos for their apps through the VideoGen API. What can you tell me about that process?
The VideoGen API is a powerful way to programmatically generate videos at scale. It’s used by developers who want to add video capabilities to their apps, by marketing platforms to auto-generate branded videos, and even by businesses creating personalized onboarding or training content at scale. You send in text (like a blog post, product description, or a short message) along with a few settings — like preferred voice, language, and visuals — and we return a fully generated video file. All the visuals, music, and voiceovers are copyright-safe and ready to use commercially. What pricing plans do you offer and what are the differences between them?
We offer three main plans:- Pro: Great for individuals, students, and creators. Users can create unlimited videos for just $24/mo. Best for non-commercial use.
- Business: Built for teams, businesses, and professional creators who need full commercial rights, collaboration features, and faster support.
- We also offer enterprise solutions for larger customers with custom needs, like large teams, integrations, or high-volume usage.
What’s next for VideoGen? What can we expect from the company going forward?
We’re focused on making video creation feel as seamless as writing an email. That means faster workflows, smarter AI, and more integrations — especially for businesses. We’re also leaning more into personalization and localization: imagine generating a product video once and automatically publishing it in 10 different languages, with native-sounding voices and region-specific visuals. That’s where we’re headed. We’re also working closely with our B2B customers to make it easy to embed VideoGen into their own platforms through our API.Is there anything else about your work that you’d like to share that we haven’t covered?
Just that we’ve been blown away by the creativity of our users. People are using VideoGen to make everything from wedding invitations to corporate training videos to viral TikToks. We’ve even seen blind users create videos for the first time, and parents use VideoGen to communicate with their autistic children. Our job is to keep building tools that unlock that kind of creativity — faster, easier, and more accessible than ever before. To learn more about VideoGen, you can visit videogen.io
