HostPapa vs Crazy Domains – Hard to Choose, but I Did 2024

Mark Holden Written by:

Crazy Domains and HostPapa offer various web hosting plans at affordable prices, but which one is better value for money?

After testing both hosts across multiple categories (pricing, features, performance, security, and support), I found that HostPapa has more valuable freebies and an array of security features. While both hosts provide adequate support, HostPapa beat Crazy Domains in all categories, but not by much.

Keep reading to find out what makes HostPapa the winner of this comparison.

1. Plans and Pricing

Both Are Affordable, but HostPapa Gives You More Freebies

Both hosts have a variety of hosting solutions, including shared hosting, WordPress hosting, and VPS. HostPapa offers three unmanaged and one fully managed shared hosting plan for Linux. While Crazy Domains has unmanaged shared hosting plans for both Linux and Windows – three plans for each operating system.

With HostPapa, you can choose to subscribe annually, biennially, or triennially. Crazy Domains offers annual, biennial, triennial, and decennial (10 years) subscription terms.

HostPapa’s unmanaged shared hosting packages are cheaper than Crazy Domains, and you get useful freebies such as a free domain name (for the first year), a free SSL certificate, and free Cloudflare CDN.

HostPapa has a 30-day money-back guarantee, while the Crazy Domains guarantee is 60-days.

The winner? Although Crazy Domains has more shared hosting plans, HostPapa is more cost-effective and gives you your money’s worth.

2. Features

HostPapa Offers More Value-Added Features Than Crazy Domains

Both hosts offer a wide range of essential features with Linux shared hosting packages, such as unlimited bandwidth, 100 to unlimited email accounts, cPanel, application installer, DDoS protection, and CloudLinux. Nevertheless, several differences make one better than the other.

Crazy Domains’ Linux shared hosting plans give you 150 GB to unlimited disk space, 2 to 10 free stock images (from its stock image service), and you can host 1 to unlimited websites.

With HostPapa, you get from 100 GB to unlimited SSD storage, a free website builder, and can host 2 to unlimited websites. Unlike Crazy Domains, HostPapa also provides a free CDN, free SSL, free domain, and free site migration.

Compare these two hosts in the table below:

HostPapa Crazy Domains
Hosting Types Shared (managed and unmanaged), WordPress hosting, VPS, reseller Shared (Linux and Windows), WordPress hosting, VPS (Linux and Windows)

Email Accounts 100 – Unlimited (depending on the plan) 100 – Unlimited
Free CDN
Free Site Migration
Money-Back Guarantee 30 days 60 days
HostPapa wins this round due to its numerous extra freebies.

3. Performance

Both Have Mediocre Performance, but HostPapa Has Perfect Uptime

HostPapa promises a 99.9% uptime guarantee. I tested the actual uptime over 30 days using Uptime Robot, and it scored 100%, which is the perfect score.

[HostPapa] - [UptimeRobot uptime test]

HostPapa has servers in Canada and the U.S.A. I used Sucuri to test the loading speeds. The test was inconclusive due to a connection failure with most servers, including the Australian server, leading to a disappointing score of F.

[HostPapa] - [Sucuri server test]

I also tested the performance using GT Metrix. I set the server location to Australia, and HostPapa scored a B at 85% for page loading and an overall performance score of C at 73%. Not bad, but not great either.

[HostPapa] - [GTMatrix performance test]

On the other hand, Crazy Domains also promises the industry-standard 99.9% uptime. However, when I tested it using Uptime Robot over the same period (30 days), it showed an actual uptime of 99.98%. Even though it exceeded its promise, it still wasn’t as strong as HostPapa.

[CrazyDomains] - [UptimeRobot uptime test]

Crazy Domains has servers in Australia, the U.K., the U.S.A, Belgium, Hong Kong, India, and Singapore. I expected to get a higher score compared to HostPapa, due to the additional server locations. Sadly, when putting it to the test using Sucuri, most server locations showed slow speeds, and the Australian server failed to connect, giving an overall score of C.

[CrazyDomains] - [Sucuri server test]

I repeated the test using GT Metrix (location set to Australia). The results were a little more promising, with a loading speed score of B at 85% and an overall score of C at 74%.

[CrazyDomains] - [GTMatrix performance test]

As you can see, both hosts are very close when it comes to performance. However, HostPapa has the upper hand with its perfect uptime earning it the winning title of this round.

4. Security

HostPapa Has More Free Security Features

Both HostPapa and Crazy Domains secure accounts with DDoS protection, firewalls against malicious attacks, and 24/7 server monitoring. However, this is where the similarities end.

While HostPapa includes free automatic daily backups with some plans, Crazy Domains offers automatic weekly backups with all plans.

HostPapa also provides a wide range of security features, including:
  • Brute-Force protection
  • CloudLinux OS (secure isolation of accounts on the same server)
  • Patchman enhanced auto-security
  • ModSecurity
Both hosts secure email accounts with antivirus and antimalware.

HostPapa defeats Crazy Domains in the security challenge for having a broader range of features.

5. Support

HostPapa Provides a Free Training Session, and Its Support is Available in Four Languages

Both HostPapa and Crazy Domains have informative and resourceful websites with comprehensive knowledgebases covering the most important topics.

HostPapa also offers a free one-on-one 30-minute training session with one of its experts.

You can contact both hosts’ customer support 24/7 via phone, live chat, email, and support ticket. Unlike Crazy Domains, HostPapa’s support is available in English, French, German, and Spanish.

I contacted HostPapa’s support using both the live chat and support ticket. I received a reply within three hours with the support ticket, which isn’t as responsive as I would’ve hoped.

However, I was instantly connected to a live chat representative, and they promptly answered all my questions.

[HostPapa] - [Support live chat]

Even though Crazy Domains states that its support is available 24/7, the live chat wasn’t available a few times. In that case, you can still send an email directly from the chat window.

I was lucky to get connected to a live chat agent, and the responses were almost instant.

[HostPapa] - [Contact form]

Both HostPapa and Crazy Domains have reliable support. But HostPapa’s multilingual support team, free training session, and actual 24/7 availability make it the winner in this round.

Crazy Domains Loses Out to HostPapa

Both HostPapa and Crazy Domains serve as excellent web hosting choices for users on a budget. While these two hosts remain closely competitive, HostPapa consistently outperformed Crazy Domains, emerging victorious in all five categories.

Nevertheless, I wasn’t impressed by the results of the page loading speed tests. I recommend taking a look at the best web hosting services if you’re looking for quality web hosting at a low cost.
