Otherwise, you could end up with nonsensical – or even plagiarized – text. And this won’t do you any favors, either in terms of SEO or in the eyes of your audience.

Pretty much every AI writing tool out there claims to be able to produce original, high-quality content with just a click of a button. But as someone who writes and edits for a living, I’m extremely skeptical about automatically generated text. That’s why I decided to test out a few of the top AI writers to see if they really live up to the hype.

What We Look For in the Best AI Writing Tools

Modern AI writing tools have long passed the basic barriers of coherence and readability. This means that any review of the text’s quality will be similar to any other kind of text review: a little on the subjective side.

That said, the ranking process wasn’t arbitrary either. Besides personally testing each of these tools and comparing my results to the in-depth AI writer reviews from our team of experts, I made sure to evaluate each AI writer based on the following criteria:

• Organic-sounding text. Of course, the bare minimum for the generated text was that it needed to make sense and follow basic grammar rules, but I also made sure that the text didn’t sound awkward or unnatural. I did overlook the occasional odd and silly sentence, but too much nonsensical text was an immediate red flag.
• Originality. All AI models learn from previously existing content and imitate it to a degree, but that doesn’t mean plagiarism or paraphrasing is acceptable. I checked each text using Copyscape to make sure it wasn’t copied from another source.

Copy.ai won me over immediately with the quality of its generated content. Regardless of what my prompts were, Copy.ai delivered coherent, human-sounding text that worked for its intended use – emphasis on that last part. Copy.ai offers a wide variety of templates for use cases as general as Long Form Content and as specific as Personalized Cold Email From LinkedIn Profile, and it delivers unique and useful content for each of those use cases.

I started by testing out the Blog Post Wizard for my standardized test, but I soon found myself playing with its capacities to create video captions, mission statements, and marketing roadmaps. You can also create your own templates if you need a specific type of content for future reference.

Though Copy.ai’s generated content is always decent, you will find a noticeable gap in quality between its email marketing and personal letter-writing capabilities. It may also not do great with more obscure topics. This is probably because it has less existing material to draw from, and it would be most useful for general topics already extensively covered online. Above all else, Rytr offers variation. You can generate content in more than 30 different languages and choose from over 20 different tones and over 40 different use cases. You can also set a custom creativity level for each prompt and generate up to 3 different results simultaneously.

What really sets Rytr apart, though, is how much flexibility it gives you. Rytr is one of the few tools on this list to offer a proper word processor with full editing capabilities for your generated content. This is valuable as its raw outputs aren’t always the best. In my tests, the writing itself was decent, but there wasn’t much flow between ideas. Also, it can sometimes provide a lot of irrelevant background information and repetition.

Because it sometimes struggles to string ideas together, but does an admirable job of writing creative content that adapts to its use cases, I’d recommend Rytr more as an AI assistant than a full AI writer. Though it might not be ideal if you’re looking to generate complete, usable content with a click of a button, Rytr can be a wonderful assistant for writers looking to make their process more efficient and break through writer’s block.

I can see how Jasper.ai has gotten so much attention. Quite simply, it has a ton of customization options and allows you to input a lot of information. You can even give it a whole content brief or introduction. I also found it particularly adept at creating a unique brand voice and sticking to it.

Jasper’s brand voice features are far more original and far more consistent than most other AI writing tools. This means that Jasper can reliably deliver high-quality content for businesses and brands. However, the main issue I ran into with Jasper.ai was that I could only get it to produce short texts – no more than 300 words at a time – even when using the “long-form” option.

Since it delivers snappy, high-quality results for a brand voice and offers more than 50+ business-specific templates, I’d recommend Jasper for any business that needs a hand in the marketing department. 4. Writesonic: Best AI Writing Tool for Streamlining Content Creation

At first glance, Writesonic might seem very similar to Copy.ai. Both have a wide variety of templates, inputs, and options for creating a brand voice. Both seem to target marketing and SEO-based teams and businesses. And both offer templates for long-form article creation as well as short-form generative chats.

But Writesonic and Copy.ai have some notable differences. For starters, Writesonic’s user dashboard offers fewer options for organizing projects but it does have more generative features on display, like image and audio generation, SEO optimization, and full-length article writers. However, the main difference lies in the quality of the generated text. Writesonic can sound stilted at times, but it does a far better job at stringing ideas together.

Though its “Article Writer 6” – a very similar tool to AI Writer that lets you create full-length articles with live citations – surprised me, Writesonic’s SEO Optimizer and text-enhancing features set it apart from other AI tools. This makes the distinction between Copy.ai and Writesonic important. While Copy.ai is a good copywriting tool, I’d recommend Writesonic to copywriters and advertisers looking to streamline their content creation process.

Sudowrite is an AI-writing generator made for fiction and narrative writing. Though it can’t help you with branded or SEO-friendly content, it can do wonders for helping you craft an engaging story and avoid writer’s block.

This tool is great for creative writing but if you’re looking for a well-rounded solution, you’ll be better off with the top choices on my list.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the OG text generator and, in fact, relies on the very technology that most writing tools on this list use. However, if you’re OK with its volatile raw results and don’t need a custom editor like Copy.ai or Rytr, it’s still the leading platform for generating content ideas.

The Best AI Writing Tool Will Elevate Your Content

The market is flush with AI writing tools right now, but don’t be fooled by the “AI” label. Not every AI writer will give you the features and outputs that you need for crafting effective, unique content.

If you’re looking for a tool that does a little bit of everything but does copywriting and marketing especially well, Copy.ai is my top recommendation. Though its wide variety of templates and user-friendly dashboard are certainly good, what astounded me was that the generated text was so natural.
