Freelancers Cross the Borders

Guru spreads its reach across the world, inviting everyone from the UK to Australia the chance to become a part of this truly impressive venture. The only real let down is the fact they charge such a hefty fee for becoming a part of it, which doesn’t matter if you are happy with the service you are getting but can be a breaking point for low-level users trying to make a living from the site.

People from all over the world work at Guru. Here you’ll see freelancers from the USA, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world alike. The main difference is that with Guru an applicant from China or India, or Philippines doesn’t make you cringe automatically – and don’t get us wrong, by no means we a trying to be racist here, but many under-qualified and overly pushy freelancers from these countries have indeed soured many employers to hiring residents of these countries. Here you’ll be looking forward to every new application for your project as any letter might become a beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration.

Guru is a finely executed tool that ensures high quality working experience for the both participants of the freelancer-employer deal. They have been on the market for more than 10 years, which proves that people at Guru have found some kind of lively formula for staying atop of such a turbulent business as providing the world with freelance services and acting as the responsible third party between the clients and the employees.

A Touch of Humor and Personality to See You Through

Everyone likes a fun experience with freelance sites and Guru definitely have a touch of humor and a dash of fun to add to the whole experience. Whether that humor comes in the form of sad and happy smiley faces when filling out forms at the registration part, or just that pleasant feeling that makes you want to stay for more, they certainly offer something for every user.

The layout of Guru is good-looking and the navigation is intuitive until you stumble upon their blog – this is the place on Guru, which could have used a little more structure and tagging, since this source of invaluable information is not that easy to navigate. It is highly appreciated if you take some time to fill out your portfolio and info – until then you’ll be simply billeted to the planet Earth. The search functions that let you browse through others’ job postings and freelancer profiles are simply stunning.

Here Is Where the Magic Happens

Guru doesn’t take after other freelance websites that run contests and incorporate complicated experience points-based rating systems. The feedback score is important for both the employers and the freelancers, but only in quite human terms – there won’t be too many people working for you or hiring you if you have low feedback points, right? You can describe the work projects in whatever terms you want, but bear it in mind that direct contact information disclosure is a big no-no on Guru, which can get your account suspended or terminated if abused.

Some of the other debatable features on Guru include the special time-tracking software called Time Tracker and the “Answers” message board that acts like a cross between FAQ and user forum.

Here's Where It All Gets Very Complicated

Unless you are some kind of Math or Statistics MS you’ll have a hard time sorting out the service and membership fees that are being deducted from the employer’s payment every time a payment for a well-done job takes place. There are three types of accounts with monthly fees varied on the sector you are working in. If you pay in bulk you get 20% discount.

  • Payment System – Verified credit card account or PayPal
  • Payment Protection – Guru-specific SafePay system that requires additional registration and verification
  • Payment Disputes – Mediation and Arbitration available only to registered SafePay users who have attempted to settle the dispute themselves + only if the sum in question is no less than $25

Depending on your membership type and the activityfeedback-based level on Guru you pay 2,95% of each transaction + 4,5%-11,95% per monetary operation. This percentage system really leans towards some heavy Math and even some kind of occult numerology as it may seem, but in reality there are tons of FAQ on this account already answered so with little practice you’ll be able to per-calculate the membership and transaction fees you’ll have to pay on a given project.

We Don't Want to Talk to You

Guru Help Center does not feature live-chat or a phone line, but the “Answers” message board and extensive FAQ section + the e-mail based ticket system should be able to help you resolve any questions. The thing is – their FAQ and blog combined is an overwhelmingly detailed tool that can really help you with anything, even if it’s you second-ever time on the Web. If it is your first-ever experience on-line altogether the “Answers” will help you. No, seriously – even if you are an alien. Maybe this is the reason Guru indicates your initial location as “Earth”?

  • Brilliant FAQ subdivided into client-specific sections
  • E-mail support
  • No live-chat
  • No phone help line

Summary

Guru is a freelance website full of advantages and safety-nets for those dealing with freelancers. One of the major drawbacks are the high monthly fees and the transaction commissions. The percentage calculation system is also something of a near-occult nightmare, but in time all this will seem quite easy. The overall level of competence of the freelancers and the user experience from the site-provided tools left us highly satisfied with working through Guru. This is truly a resource to be recommended.

Pros
  • Customer service kind of responded to a question.
Cons
  • Reviews are hidable.
  • Invoicing is terrible, horrible dispute resolution.
  • Terrible work rooms.
Summary Hired someone on this website who did next to nothing. There was no way to get money back. I left a negative review but it looks like the "developer" has a way to hide the review -- which is probably why this person had no negative reviews when I hired her. STAY AWAY.
