No Need to Break The Bank For Quality Designs
With most logo contest sites and design quality, you get a mixed bag, from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. CrowdSpring is no different to others in this aspect with its varying quality levels, but the breath of fresh air for me is that CrowdSpring have a lot of designers who are in touch with the modern world, as well as usability issues. This means you get the designs you are looking for, and they can be re-sized without causing problems to the quality.
I should points out that there are some average looking designs that you would probably pass on, but there are some hidden gems that won’t have you breaking the bank.
Little Things Make CrowdSpring More Complicated than It Should Be
The CrowdSpring website is easy, simple to navigate and makes the most out of a straightforward design to still give off a professional feel. As a visitor you might find it annoying that most contests can’t be viewed unless you register, but when you’re a customer trying to conceal your new logo from competitors, this may actually be a plus. At the same time, considering this feature exists it’s a shame that the CrowdSpring website doesn’t have a gallery showcasing their products.
I’ll talk more about the packages down below, but for now suffice it to say that CrowdSpring makes you choose a package twice and that can get a bit confusing. The contest building interface is nice, though, and lists all your potential upgrades and add-ons on the order form itself – which also includes your brief. You can review your order before proceeding to the payment stage which will launch your contest. After you’ve rated, commented, shared your entries and finally picked a winner, you and the designer will have 30 days to finalize the order and make small changes before you receive your finished logo.
There Are No Details Here, So You Better Type It Up
The CrowdSpring brief could use more detail, which is disappointing when you’re looking to give your contest participants as much information as possible. They do have one neat feature, though – the option to choose which file types you’d like to receive in your final package.
Some Great Community Features
Oddly enough, CrowdSpring doesn’t have a testimonial page. That’s okay, though, because they do have a ton of other features for you to enjoy. The first is a designer profile gallery which can be found under Browse – Creatives. Though the designers aren’t rated they each have a portfolio so you can see their work. You can also invite them to join your project.
A few more features are available at the contest stage. This includes “presentation” pages for art directors and project managers or, more importantly, “focus groups” for getting your colleagues’ input.
An Overly Complicated System Hides a Good Price
Like I said, CrowdSpring’s pricing system is pretty confusing. That’s because it differentiates between project types, which give you additional project management options, and packages within those types, which affect the number of entries and designers you should expect. Seeing as an Economy project can still draw in as many designers as a standard one, there’s not much reason to pick a more expensive type unless you really, really like your privacy.
Beyond all this confusion, though, it should be said that CrowdSpring’s Economy option is actually really good, with many designers participating for a pretty great contest price.
Seeing as the Pro project type has a minimum price of over $1000, I took the liberty of excluding it from our table.
CrowdSpring Tackles Support Head-On
The CrowdSpring support is just awesome. They have every contact avenue you can think of and then a couple of more, like a Facebook and Twitter account that clearly also functions as a customer service venue. The FAQ is about as detailed as it can be, there’s live support available on the order form and beyond and the website is helpful enough to list their office hours together with their phone number. Don’t be surprised if you get a reply on a Sunday, though – CrowdSpring is just that good.

CrowdSpring is a solid service through and through, with just a few small glitches keeping it from being a great one. This is apparent in usability, the creative brief and even the quality of the designs, which are good although unremarkable. In spite of all this they still offer a good service, especially when it comes to support, and the price is very good for a contest.
